Artist Statement
My work grapples with anatomical, biological, physiological and psychological landscapes - their boundaries utterly permeable. It’s about investigating my bodily experience of the world - bringing insides out - fibrous matter, tissues and tendons, organs and skin. Curious, quirky, wonky, mysterious and ridiculous; at times melancholic, often absurd and sometimes even comical but almost always disconcerting.
I create life, a new nature, for myself, my own language - resilient, ambiguous forms emerge unapologetically like they’re fighting to be here full of anticipation, potential and the gusto of life force. Sculptures are both ‘other-worldly’ and ‘of this world’; everything and nothing. But this is subtle; no shock tactics are required, they’re arriving whether you want them or not, and they’re not prepared to be labelled or categorised. There are unknowns - something about attract and repel - not slapped in the face but gently teasing perceptions and emotions. Unashamedly bodily, visceral, intestinal - they creep up on me when I’m not looking, tap me on the shoulder and ask me to come closer and tell them what they are.
They are disruptors - offering a series of contradictions between striving and thriving; animate and inanimate; hard and soft; action and idle. As metaphors for life’s many paradoxes, sometimes utterly peaceful, but often contorted and distorted, they refer directly to life evoking and layering materiality, physicality, existence and mortality. They celebrating both the ordinary and extraordinary; fear, pain and vulnerability have their place, but self-acceptance, tenderness, harmony and security are also laid bare - the evidence always inconclusive.
